>> everybody loved him and he was so good at what he did. >> we'll miss him dearly. >> we do want to begin with the accident as our top story and nbc's tom costello is in the bronx with the very latest on the investigation. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hey, natalie. good morning to you. we're at the crash scene. that's the train crash scene right behind me. you can see they managed to right several of the cars already. four dead, 63 injured. the engineer is in the hospital. the ntsb is hoping to talk to him some time today. but the ntsb has the digital recordings from both ends of the train. the black boxes. they are hoping that will tell them how fast the train was traveling and might there have been a mechanical problem. working in the cold under the glare of flood lights crews begin picking up the remains of the north metro train. the deadliest new york train crash in more than 20 years. the job now for ntsb investigators piecing together

how this happened on a heavily traveled line along the hudson river. >> our mission is to understand not just what happened but why it happened with the intent of preventing it from happening again. >> reporter: passengers and witnesses describe a horrific scene with victims being tossed through the cars and ejected out the windows. >> it started to flip and fell over and passengers fell on top of me. there was screaming and people crying out. >> i saw people being carried out. people that couldn't walk were being helped. >> reporter: the trip started in poughkeepsie, new york, at 5:54 bound for grand central station in manhattan. at 7:20 a.m., just 20 minutes from its final destination, the train went off the tracks in the bronx near the hudson river. it needed to slow from 70 to 30 miles per hour but many witnesses reported it was going much too fast. the engineer told law enforcement his brakes malfunctioned.

coming into the spuyten duyvil station the trains make this dramatic 90-degree left-hand turn, but in this case they went off the tracks and toward the harlem river. since speed was a factor, the question is why. >> safety is job one and if there is a lesson to learn from this tragedy, we want to make sure that we learn it. so we're probably most eager to hear the results of the ntsb investigation. >> reporter: this is a busy train line. 50,000 people take the hudson line into and out of manhattan every single day and this morning you might imagine there's significant delays and you might want to plan an extra hour to 90 minutes if you're coming in to work today. in some cases they're on shuttle buses. standard procedure, the crew given drug and alcohol testing. they're also going to check and see how much sleep the crew had just before this accident. the night before. and is there any evidence that they were distracted? texting while operating the vehicle, anything like that. you may remember, guys, we had

several big high profile and terrible accidents recently in which train operators were found to be speeding and texting while operating.operating. back to you. >> tom costello on the story. thank you very much. new york's governor andrew cuomo is at the scene of that derailment. governor, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> you had a chance to look around. there's cars everywhere. first responders had to rescue people from within the cars and in some cases under the cars. what was your first reaction when you saw the scene? >> well, matt, it was actually much worse than it looked. it was truly a horrific situation. from the pictures you see the trains are tossed about it looks like a child's train set that was just strewn about. as the cars were skidding across the ground they were actually picking up a lot of debris and dirt and stones and the tree limbs were going through the cars. so it actually looked worse up close.

and it's -- it's your worst nightmare. people get on a train in the morning. they think they're going out just another day and then tragedy strikes. >> you said yesterday that you think obviously speed did play a role but you don't know whether it was mechanical error or human error. the ntsb recovered the black box from that train. that will be an important piece in this investigation. have ntsb officials told you how quickly they'll be able to make the determination between mechanical error and human error? >> they're working on it now. they haven't given us a time frame. first of all, we want to know the best we can what happened because we want to learn from this. if there's anything the mta can do to improve the service by looking at this tragedy we want to do it. we also want to get service restored because as your piece said this is a very busy line and it will be problematic for the commuters and we would like to get service up toward the end

of the week. we haven't gotten anything specific from the ntsb. there are several options that could have been a problem with the track. there could have been a quote/unquote equipment failure or it could have been just operator errors. human beings make mistakes. >> you said there could have been a problem with the tracks. the mta chief engineer recently said that the mta is behind on several safety projects and i guess maintenance projects. do you think it's possible that that played a role in this? >> those are the three options that are on the table, matt. problem with the track, equipment problem, or operator error. i'm not an expert in this field. working with the experts over the past day, i think it is going to be speed related. this was a tricky turn on the system. but it's a turn that's been here

for decades and trains negotiate all day long. so it's not about the turn. i think it's going to turn out to be about the speed more than anything and the operator's operation of the train at that time. >> new york's governor i thank you for your time this morning. >> i wish it was under different circumstances. >> me, too. thank very much. we're learning about the deadly car crash in california that killed two people including "fast & furious" paul walker. joe fryer, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. investigators are still looking into what happened leading up to the crash. meanwhile, here at the scene a memorial for paul walker continues to grow and fans are not the only ones showing up here. one of his well-known co-stars also paid his respects. >> tyreese gibson said nothing as he wiped away tears for paul walker. it's not the way hollywood

>> now just the grubby stage. we want to begin on a more serious note with the new rossen reports in the wake of the deadly train derailment. officials say there's technology that could prevent accidents like this. today's national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, no official cause of this accident over the weekend but investigators are looking at speed and possible human error here. now there's a state of the art commuter system that can literally override the engineer and take control of the train to make sure it's not speeding or going somewhere it shouldn't. this morning, the federal government wants it installed nationwide to make us all safer. officials believe speed was a factor when this commuter train took a curve and went off the rails. but experts claim revolutionary technology could make accidents like this a thing of the past. >> state of the art collision

avoidance technology. >> reporter: it's called positive train control or ptc. a sophisticated system of sensors on the rails and inside the locomotive. even using satellites to track the train's movements and prevent many accidents caused by operator error. if the train is going too fast, the computer warns the crew. if the engineer doesn't slow down, the computer activates the brakes. ptc helps prevent collisions too. stopping the train from blowing operator is distracted. >> it will absolutely save lives. both crew members, passengers, and maybe people along the wayside as well. >> reporter: like in spain this summer when this train flew off the rails. the operator took the turn at nearly twice the speed allowed. 79 people were killed. in massachusetts, this transit train collided with another after the operator fell asleep. the ntsb said ptc technology

would have prevented the accident. in california, 25 people were killed when this commuter train ran through a signal and collided with a freight train. again, investigators said ptc would have made the difference. >> that on board ptc computer will take control of the train and prevent the accidents from occurring. >> and the ntsb agrees. positive train control is on its most wanted list of safety improvements. amtrak is already using it on some routes. so is metro link in california and bnsf, a freight line but congress wants it nationwide. mandating many by the end of 2015, including metro north. the line involved in this weekend's deadly derailment. >> metro north is working aggressively to meet the

a man that spent six days trapped in a car wreck in the mountains of colorado is opening up for the first time about his experience. here is nbc's mara sciampcampo. >> i remember waking up thinking i was in a dream. >> reporter: but it was a nightmare. one evening in october, rick was riding in the passenger seat of a truck when the driver had a sudden diabetic coma. >> we flew through a median over the other side of the road and off a 30 foot cliff. >> reporter: rick's friend was killed in the crash. rick survived but his legs were crushed, his face smashed. he was edged in in the cab of this truck. >> six days, six nights, no food. no water. i was lying on top of my dead friend. my dead friend. >> reporter: rick was trapped along a quite stretch of u.s. highway south of denver clinging to the hope that someone would find him. someone did. a worker with the department of transportation spotted the truck

and called 911. rick's family had been frantic. >> and we knew he was missing because he left his dog behind. he never leaves his dog anywhere. >> reporter: then the call came. they were found and one person had severe injuries and i knew that was my son. we're always going to celebrate that day as a second birthday. >> but the celebration would have to wait. rick was in intensive care. both eggs had to be amputated below the knee. one arm was broken. several fingers were also amputated. his jaw shattered. yet despite those brutal injuries, rick is ready to embrace every moment. >> there's just so many ways i should have been dead that i'm going to appreciate life from now on. >> reporter: for today, nbc news new york. remarkable. very much so. absolutely. coming up next, switching gears here, delivery by drones? on this cyber monday, there's a

tom costello is in the bronx with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're overlooking the crash site and literally 30 seconds ago they moved this train. they finally got one of the cars that was right here and moved it out of the way. we have a live chopper shot to show you of the scene. in total, eight cars including the locomotive went off the tracks yesterday. four people dead, 63 injured. the engineer is in the hospital. the ntsb hoping to talk to him sometime today. the question is how fast was this train going as it came around this dramatic 90 degree bend. almost everyone who was on the train or witnesses have said the train seemed to be going very fast and the engineer said he tried to apply the brakes but they didn't work. the question is how fast was the train going? was there a mechanical problem? the ntsb already recovered the black boxes from both ends of the train. they will look at the data to see what it says about how fast

the train was going and they're also going to be looking at the crew's action before the crash, during the crash. this is a big investigation, it's likely to take time. in the meantime, it's really disrupting the commute into and out of manhattan on the hudson line today. tamron? thank you very much, tom. i spoke this morning with one of the survivors that said the crash was like a slow motion movie. he was heading to new york for a dentist convention when the train jumped the tracks. he escaped with cuts and bruises. the train lifted to the left side and started to roll back and forth. it was tossing me like a rag doll and i ended from the right side of the train to the left side smashed into the side wall. >> he said his daughter who appeared with him this morning decided not to join him on the train trip because she was too busy getting ready for college. police say speed played a role in the one car crash saturday that killed fast and furious movie star paul walker.

he was riding in a red porsche driven by his friend, a former race car driver when it smashed into a light pole and a tree in southern california and burst into flames. the friend was also killed. hundreds of fans along with costars gathered sunday at the site of the crash. walker was 40 years old. the obama administration says it has met its own december deadline for significantly improving the health care enrollment website. officials say healthcare.gov site can now handle 50,000 users at a time. at least 800,000 a day. however, the administration isn't scheduled to release it's next round of actual enrollment figures until the middle of the month, december 23rd is the last day to sign up for coverage that begins in january. after a few delays prince harry's trek to the south pole is now underway. nbc special correspondent

back buckingham palace. >> reporter: good morning. after several days of delays due to bad weather and the logistics of getting thousands of pounds of gear from the russian base to the 87th degree parallel that they'll be setting off from, yesterday at 8:00 a.m. eastern time prince harry and the teams of injured soldiers from the u.s., the u.k. and the common wealth got off on the race to the south pole. they're hoping to cover about 175 miles which should take around 15 days. but don't be deceived by some of those photographs of the sunshine and the relatively mild conditions. in fact, it was a balmy minus 17 degrees farnenheit when it took off. having been there myself, it's not going to be like that the whole way. the big question is, they're joined by actors and as prince harry is fourth in line to the throne, will they let him win? tamron?

63 injured. the job now is for the ntsb investigators to figure out exactly what happened. speed, was it a factor, or mechanical problem? >> the brakes maybe not working is what the conductor had reportedly said when he was interviewed. so all of that of course now being evaluated as investigators try to piece together what exactly happened. but in the meantime we have sadly learned that one of our own from the "today" show, long time member of the family. has worked here tirelessly for 20 years, jim lovell was an audio technician, passed away on that train derailment accident. he is survived by his wife, nancy, and three sons and daughter. nancy sent a nice message to us a short while ago. she said jim loved his today show comrades so much. he was all happy to go to work. i'll miss his stories about his

time there. he was coming in to work on the tree lighting which is happening in two days. on his way to work. >> our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the people that lost their lives. the other three people and the other 65 people that were injured. >> badly injured. >> some of them very badly. so it's something that we take for granted every day, a, getting up and going to work. >> right. >> and we never know. but, you know, especially something on a commuter line that millions of people take every year. >> yeah. >> exactly. one of the deadliest train derailment accidents in this area in decades. >> something so routine. a quiet sunday morning. you roll in, you're going to work or whatever. >> if you have taken that train, it's one of the most gorgeous rides in america. >> it's beautiful. >> used to commute. >> along the hudson. >> gorgeous. >> and makes that turn, and continues on into the city. especially on a beautiful morning, there's nothing you can beat. for that to happen then is just devastating. >> tragic. >> a lot of people talking about that turn.

[ female announcer ] do you have enough pillsbury crescents? taking a look at the headlines, the holiday shopping season is off to a disappointing start for retailers across the country. according to the latest numbers, weekend were down almost 3% from last year, but apparently people were doing a lot of window shopping, because foot traffic was actually up by 27%. the obama administration says it has met it's own december deadline for significantly improving the health care enrollment website. officials say healthcare.gov can now handle 50,000 users at a time. however, actual enrollment figures aren't scheduled for release until the middle of this month. meantime, december 23rd is still the last day to sign up for coverage. new research suggests toddlers may learn better when they're allowed to get as messy as they want.

the study from the university of iowa found that toddlers learned new words like applesauce, puddle and playdough when they could play with it. in other words, just let them make a mess. it was another impressive weekend at the box office for "hunger games" flick. "catching fire" brought in $175 million. it took in $112 million from friday to sunday. besting "harry potter and the sorcerer's stone" back in 2001. and "frozen" was second and "authoriz "thor: the dark world" was a distant third. talk about a bird's eye view. take a look at this wildlife ranger in australia releasing this video of a sea eagle that snatched a camera. they set up the camera in may hoping to record imagines of crocodiles and you can see the bird's entire journey across the landscape. the camera was just found.

transit bus is expected to head back to school today. her father says sasha has one last doctor's appointment this morning. if all goes well, the teenager could go to class after that. she returned home from the hospital last week after spending several weeks recovering from second and third-degree burns. we're going to have a look at weather and traffic right after this break.
